DC Water crews are investigating a sinkhole located at the exit to South Dakota Avenue Northeast inbound from New York Avenue/Route 50. Due to the instability of the road, the exit is closed, and traffic is being diverted to alternate routes.

DC Water’s Piney Branch Tunnel Project is moving ahead with construction, the next phase of the Authority’s Clean Rivers initiative to improve the water quality in the Anacostia River, Potomac River, and Chesapeake Bay watershed. The project received approval from the National Park Service (NPS) following completion of the Environmental Assessment, including rigorous public review.

On Saturday, March 8, DC Water will close the outbound lane of Clara Barton Parkway at Chain Bridge to inspect a section of the Potomac Interceptor, a major sewer line which crosses the Potomac River. The lane closure will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m.

This notice provides important information about mobilizing the Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) construction site at the Capital Crescent Trail in Georgetown. Beginning on or about the week of March 10, 2025, DC Water’s contractors will start setting the site up for the first construction phase.

DC Water and its contractor continue work to stabilize the roadway on Suitland Parkway SE between Firth Sterling Ave and Stanton Rd where a 54-inch stormwater main failed last night, creating a sinkhole. One outbound lane remains closed and is expected to impact the evening rush hour. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes and avoid this area.

DC Water is investigating a sinkhole involving the failure of a 54-inch stormwater main on Suitland Parkway in Southeast DC. For safety reasons, one outbound lane of Suitland Parkway between Firth Sterling Ave and Stanton Rd SE is closed. Inbound traffic on Suitland Parkway is unaffected. Drivers may want to consider alternate routes.
