Program Overview:

Embark on a transformative 12-week journey with our Summer Internship Program. This program offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in your field of study while contributing to impactful projects in the utility industry.

Key Details:

  • Duration: May 18 - August 7, 2026
  • Weekly Commitment: 40 hours per week
  • Work Experience: Engage in projects that align with your academic pursuits
  • Professional Development: Training on effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and more
  • Field Trips: Gain insights into DC Water’s mission and its impact on Washington, DC, and surrounding areas

Objective

At DC Water, we are committed to fostering the educational aspirations of the next generation as part of our mission. Our Summer Internship Program aims to:

  • Expose Students to Career Opportunities: Introduce interns to various roles within the public sector, helping them explore potential career paths
  • Enhance Professional Skills: Equip participants with transferable skills that will benefit them in any occupation or industry
  • Promote Community Impact Awareness: Encourage interns to understand the significance of our work and its contributions to the community

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the DC Water Summer Internship Program, candidates must commit to the program duration (May 18 to August 7, 2026) and meet the following criteria:

  • Enrollment: Currently enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university
  • Student Status: Open to both undergraduate and graduate students
  • Credit Hours: At least 30 credit hours completed by the time of application
  • GPA: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Work Authorization:
    • U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents: Proof of legal right to work in the United States is required (e.g., copy of passport, permanent resident card, or work authorization document). Students must also provide proof of residence in DC, Maryland, or Virginia upon being hired.
    • International Students: Must provide documentation demonstrating eligibility to work in the U.S. This may include a valid visa that permits employment, USCIS-issued documents proving CPT or OPT authorization, or other relevant work authorization documents.  
      • Please note that DC Water does not sponsor international students or provide benefits such as housing, transportation, or other accommodations for interns. If selected for the internship, you will be required to provide proof of your legal eligibility to work in the United States by April 24, 2026.

Application Process

Applicants must submit a complete application, which includes the following:

  • Online application
  • Unofficial Transcript
    • Official transcripts must be submitted by the offer period
  • Letter of Recommendation
    • Letters may be from an academic advisor, professor, program dean, supervisor
    • Must be written on a letterhead with the recommender’s signature or emailed directly from the recommender
  • All supporting documents must be emailed to Intern.Program@dcwater.com as PDF files by January 30, 2026. Please use the following naming convention for the subject line of your email: FirstName LastName_Department of Interest (example: John Doe_Marketing and Communications).

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Single Westbound Lane Closure on Canal Road Saturday

On Saturday, November 22, 2025, one westbound lane of Canal Road Northwest NW will be closed between Foxhall Road (Glover-Archbold Trailhead) and the Georgetown University entrance. As part of DC Water’s slope stabilization project, a crew will remove debris from the bottom of the slope. The lane closure will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
