REMINDER: DC Water to Meet Tonight with Impacted Residents in Maryland about Potomac Interceptor Repair Efforts and Remediation
DC Water is inviting Maryland residents to join us tonight for a community meeting at Walt Whitman High School at 7 p.m. for an update about ongoing repair efforts on a section of the Potomac Interceptor sewer line that failed, directly impacting the surrounding Montgomery County communities. The meeting will provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions, learn about planned environmental restoration efforts, and next steps in the emergency repair and long-term rehabilitation efforts.
The pipe collapse occurred along Clara Barton Parkway near the I-495 interchange on January 19, resulting in a significant overflow into the C & O Canal National Historical Park and Potomac River.
DC Water crews and contractors constructed a bypass to carry the wastewater around the failure and back into the Potomac Interceptor further downstream and no overflows have occurred in more than 17 days. Emergency repairs are expected to be completed by mid-March.
During the meeting, DC Water and Maryland officials will discuss what happened, the response and repair timeline, impacts to local residents and visitors, and the long-term rehabilitation plans.
