Unexpected situations, including severe weather, flooding or a temporary water or sewer service interruption, can happen with little warning. Taking a few simple steps now can help you and your household stay prepared.

Start by keeping a basic emergency supply kit on hand with nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit and other essentials.

Your emergency supplies should also include at least one gallon of drinking water per person and pet, per day, for a minimum of three days. Check expiration dates on commercially bottled water and replace other stored drinking water every six months.

It is also helpful to know where your home’s main water shut-off valve is located before you need to use it. Make sure everyone in your household understands the emergency plan and keep important phone numbers easily accessible.

Finally, stay connected to trusted sources. Sign up for DC Water alerts and AlertDC to receive timely information about water quality advisories, service interruptions, severe weather and other emergencies.

Preparation does not have to be complicated. A few small steps can help you and your family feel more ready for the unexpected.
