Backflow Prevention Assembly Fee- FAQ

For more about backflow prevention, click here

Please review the frequently asked questions below, and call (202) 364-3144 for more information.

What is this fee?

This fee will be charged to customers for each backflow prevention assembly on their property.

What are backflow prevention assemblies?

Backflow prevention assemblies are testable devices that prevent non-potable water from contaminating the potable (drinking) water supply. These assemblies are installed at points in a property's water system where contamination can occur. Examples include lawn irrigation systems, fire sprinklers, swimming pools, boilers, cooling towers, chillers, and similar systems.

Which properties have backflow prevention assemblies, and who is responsible for paying this fee?

Backflow prevention assemblies may be installed on both residential and nonresidential properties. However, only customers with testable assemblies are subject to this fee. Assemblies installed on fire sprinkler systems at residential properties are exempt from this fee.

If you're unsure whether your property has a backflow prevention assembly or have questions about the Customer Compliance Services Backflow Prevention Program, contact us at 202-364-3144 (M-F, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM) or through email at compliance@dcwater.com

Why is DC Water charging this fee?

The fee will support DC Water's efforts to ensure compliance with DC regulations designed to protect the city's drinking water from contamination. It will fund compliance site surveys by DC Water and the Online Portal—used to track the installation, maintenance, and testing of backflow prevention assemblies.

More information about the fee can be found at dcwater.com/fees, and more information about the Compliance Program can be found at dcwater.com/compliance.
