At DC Water, we are dedicated to maintaining the natural beauty of our local waterways. Our boat skimmers are essential to this mission, using state-of-the-art technology to keep the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers free from debris.

Every day, our dedicated skimmers are out removing trash, floating debris, and other pollutants from the water’s surface. These boats, equipped with large, adjustable collection arms, can handle everything from small plastic bottles to large items like furniture pieces and tires.

After storms, the role of our skimmers becomes even more crucial. Rainwater washes litter from streets, sidewalks, and gutters into the waterways, leading to a surge of floating trash and debris. This increase in debris requires our team to intensify their efforts to keep our rivers clean.

Maintaining clean waterways is a team effort. While our skimmers tackle everyday debris and medium-sized branches, larger obstacles are addressed through our collaboration with the Army Corps of Engineers, ensuring our rivers remain safe and navigable.

Our skimmers do more than just remove trash – they play an essential role in protecting our local ecosystem. By collecting debris and other harmful pollutants, we improve water quality and prevent harm to wildlife. This work not only benefits the environment, but also enhances your experience. Whether you enjoy kayaking, fishing, or simply taking in the scenic views, a clean river makes all the difference.

Next time you’re near the water, take a moment to appreciate the clean, sparkling surface – it reflects the dedication and hard work of our skimmer boat team. Their commitment ensures our waterways remain vibrant, safe, and thriving, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.
