WASA Hosts Three Public Meetings on Combined Sewer System

October 27, 2006

WASA is hosting three public meetings to discuss with the community its $2.1 billion plan to control water pollution and flooding caused by the Districts combined sewer system.

A combined sewer is a single pipe that carries both sanitary wastewater and storm run-off. During certain rainfall conditions, the capacity of a combined sewer may be exceeded. When this occurs, the excess flow, a dilute mixture of wastewater and stormwater run-off (called Combined Sewer Overflow or CSO), is discharged to the Anacostia River, Potomac River, Rock Creek and tributary waters.

The presentation will focus on WASAs efforts to control this discharge and improve the environmental and economic health of the rivers and other bodies of water in the District. Current CSO activity taking place throughout the District will also be highlighted.

Everyone is invited to attend.
