TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway Weekend Lane Closure Beginning September 19
DC CLEAN RIVERS – POTOMAC RIVER TUNNEL PROJECT
Drivers should expect a temporary southbound lane closure on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway NW between F St and Virginia Ave on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, 2026. The closure will be in place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, weather permitting.
Crews will remove a large crane on Saturday and bring in a smaller crane on Sunday. Drivers should allow extra travel time, slow down and follow signs and directions from traffic-control crews.
The crane work supports construction of the Potomac River Tunnel, which will help keep sewage and stormwater out of the Potomac River during heavy rain.

About the Project
The 5.5-mile Potomac River Tunnel is part of DC Water’s Clean Rivers Project. It will capture sewage and stormwater that can overflow into the Potomac River during heavy rain and send it to the Blue Plains Resource Recovery Facility for treatment. Once complete, the tunnel is expected to reduce these overflows by 93%. Construction is expected to be completed in 2030.
