TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Emergency Sewer Main Repair on V St NW

Sidewalk Closure on V Street NW between 1st St Street NW and Flagler Pl NW

On Monday, December 2, DC Water, in coordination with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), implemented an emergency sidewalk closure on V St NW between First St NW and Flagler Pl NW to conduct an emergency repair on a 79-inch (6.5 foot) sewer main line.

No parking is allowed adjacent to the sidewalk closure, on the east side of V St NW where it intersects with First St NW. Pedestrian and motorized traffic will be rerouted.

Detours are in effect and signs are posted while emergency repairs are underway.

The repairs are expected to require extensive work, and DC Water contractors are designing and planning the scope of work with repairs expected to be completed by mid-January, subject to permitting, weather, or other unforeseen delay. Crews will begin preliminary site work, to expedite construction and complete repairs as soon as possible.

The compromised area includes the Northeast Boundary Trunk Sewer, a 79-inch (6.5 foot) combined circular brick sewer main that traverses along First St NW onto V St NW. Recently a void was found on the corner property at the intersection of V St NW and First St NW, which indicates the start of a sink hole. Further investigation by DC Water confirmed infiltration coming through the crown of the sewer main that requires immediate repair.

We apologize for any difficulties caused by the sidewalk closure. These repairs are necessary to maintain the safety, reliability, resiliency, and sustainability of our aging infrastructure; and ensure the public health and well-being of our customers.

Traffic and Pedestrian Detour:

  • Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are directed to follow detour signage during the emergency repair (see map below).

Anticipated Schedule:

  • December 2, 2024 – January 11, 2025 (pending permit issuance and weather).

  • Work includes soil stabilization and internal sewer structural upgrades.

  • Normal work hours: 7 AM - 7 PM, Monday through Saturday.

  • Construction may occur at night or on weekends, in the event of inclement weather or certain construction activities.

People who live or work near the affected locations will notice additional construction equipment and personnel as well as noise associated with construction activities.

DC Water has successfully completed emergency repairs on a critical section of the Anacostia Force Main following a failure near Anacostia Avenue and Ponds Street Northeast in July. DC Water will be doing construction as part of a sanitary sewer rehabilitation project on Clara Barton Parkway in Maryland from Sept 8 - Oct 10, 2025, which may cause delays inbound near the I-495 Beltway interchange. One lane will be closed in the work zone to reline an 800-foot section of the sewer line, known as the Potomac Inteceptor. Access to the inner and outer loops of the Beltway will remain available.

Rock Creek Trail Site for Potomac River Tunnel Project

Starting the week of August 25, DC Water will take another big step forward in the Potomac River Tunnel Project. Ground stabilization will begin at the Rock Creek Trail site, near the Watergate Complex, to drill secant piles that will form a retaining wall for the drop shaft.
