Eastbound Canal Road Lane Closure - Work Extended

September 14, 2011

(Washington, DC) – The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water), in coordination with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), is performing joint seal repairs as part of a two-phase project to rehabilitate a 48-inch water main on Canal Road NW and M Street NW.

The first phase is on Canal Road from MacArthur Boulevard/Foxhall Road to 35th Street. Beginning July 11, 2011, construction is now scheduled for completion tentatively by September 30, 2011, weather permitting. Crews are working in one eastbound lane on Canal Road within the vicinity of Georgetown University.

Crews are working Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Impacts:

*There is closure of one eastbound lane on Canal Road
during work hours.

*Some traffic stops and delays within the vicinity of the
project area are experienced.

*To avoid delays during work hours, George Washington
Parkway or Reservoir Road may be used as alternative
routes for eastbound travel on Canal Road.

Project Overview

DC Water will be performing a two-phase rehabilitation of a 48-inch water main located on Canal Road NW and M Street NW. This continuous pipe is part of a larger transmission main that delivers drinking water to various locations in and around the District. The first phase of the Internal Joint Repairs project will occur on the section of the pipe located on Canal Road from MacArthur Boulevard/Foxhall Road to 35th Street, NW.

The second phase of the work will take place on M Street between 26th Street and New Hampshire Avenue/Ward Place, NW. The Internal Joint Repairs project is part of DC Water’s Capital Improvement Program to improve the city’s vital water and sewer infrastructure. This project also addresses persistent leakage along the main, thus providing for increased safety.

Trench boxes at construction site for new pit accessing Potomac Interceptor Upstream

DC Water and its contractors continue to make progress constructing new access points to the Potomac Interceptor, one upstream of the damaged section, and an additional entry downstream to divert more wastewater flow from the pipe. These access points will allow crews to install a bulkhead, blocking flow in the pipe upstream of the collapsed area, keeping the site as dry as possible so crews can safely remove an extensive rock dam currently blocking the pipe.

DC Water is releasing new findings regarding the environmental impacts following the January 19, collapse in a section of the Potomac Interceptor. Based on flow monitoring data collected before and after interim bypass pumping was activated, DC Water estimates approximately 243 million gallons of wastewater has overflowed from the collapse site.

Update on Extended Repairs, Safety Measures, and Water Quality Monitoring

Overnight CCTV inspection of the Potomac Interceptor revealed the blockage inside the collapsed sewer line is far more significant, showing a large rock dam stretching approximately 30 feet downstream of the original failure.
