As the District gets ready for Independence Day celebrations and America's 250th events, DC Water is taking steps to keep everyone safe and make sure that water and wastewater service runs smoothly over the holiday.

This year’s preparations come as the region faces an extreme heat wave. These conditions with the potential for record breaking temperatures across the region can pose health risks and additional difficulties for our workers and customers. To help ease the added strain on residents, DC Water has temporarily paused customer disconnections during this time. This reflects our commitment to reliable service and supporting our customers with compassion during challenging conditions.

At the same time, the large-scale activities, road closures, restricted access zones, and prolonged heat exposure require significant planning and adjustments to our day-to-day operations. To protect employees and be ready to respond to emergencies, DC Water has activated its Incident Management Team, expanded staffing, and positioned crews across the city, including secure areas. It’s part of our enhanced coordination with the District’s Emergency Operations Center, federal security partners, and regional utility partners.

DC Water is also working with event organizers across the District to help visitors cool off. Many events will feature misting tents, and DC Water has approved permits and provided the equipment needed to supply numerous events with water from nearby hydrants to keep those misters going. At the same time, DC Water crews working outdoors are being provided with extra water, sun protection, and other supplies to help them stay safe and hydrated.

These efforts are designed to protect employees who keep essential services running while continuing to meet the needs of customers. Together, they reflect DC Water’s focus on safety, reliability, and readiness during a busy and challenging holiday period.

In the event you experience a water or sewer emergency or a service disruption DC Water’s 24/7 Emergency Command Center is available to help. Call us at 202-612-3400.

As DC Water’s Board of Directors considers proposed rate increases for the upcoming 2027 and 2028 fiscal years, we’re asking customers to provide feedback during a public hearing on Tuesday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The proposed rate changes would support critical investments in safe, reliable drinking water, replacement of aging water and sewer lines, cleaner local waterways, and continued lead service line replacement across the District.

DC residents who want to replace their lead service lines may soon have more options to do it sooner—without having to wait for construction to reach their block.  While the Lead Free DC Program replaces lead service lines at no cost, DC Water has proposed two updates to its program that would make it easier and faster for some residents to get their lead pipes replaced, especially those at higher risk of lead exposure. These proposed changes have been published in the DC Register and are now open for public review.
