6th Street NW Lane Change at Northeast Boundary Tunnel Construction Site

February 10, 2020

(Washington, DC) – On or about Monday, February 17, 2020, DC Water's contractor will begin working on Phase 2 at the 6th & R Streets NW Construction Site which will require the reduction of 6th Street NW to a single lane in both directions. All other current parking and travel restrictions surrounding the site will remain in place. It is expected that this work will take approximately three months to complete. Please follow all road signs and directions.

Travel and Parking Restrictions

What’s new?

  • Southbound traffic on 6th Street, NW will merge into one lane around the construction site and will occupy a northbound through lane.
  • Northbound traffic on 6th Street, NW will begin to merge from two lanes into one lane south of R Street, NW and there will no longer be a right turn only lane at Rhode Island Avenue, NW.

Remaining the same

  • R Street will remain a one-way street heading westbound with parking restrictions along the south side of the street.
  • Eastbound traffic on Rhode Island Avenue, NW will merge left into two lanes beginning at 7th Street, NW, returning to three travel lanes just after 6th Street, NW.
  • Parking will be restricted along the south side of Rhode Island Avenue between 7th Street, NW and 6th Street, NW.
  • Parking will be restricted on northbound 6th Street, NW just before R Street to Rhode Island Avenue, NW.

Pedestrian Detours

  • Pedestrian detours remain the same. Please continue to follow the signage.

Additional Information

  • People who live or work near the affected locations will notice additional construction equipment and personnel as well as noise associated with construction activities.
  • Commuters and pedestrians will notice road signs and/or flagging personnel directing them safely around the worksite.

Project Details

The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project. It begins south of RFK Stadium and will extend north to Rhode Island Avenue, NE, and west to 6th Street NW. When complete, the approximately five-mile-long tunnel will significantly reduce chronic flooding in areas it serves, as well as reduce the amount of combined sewer overflows into the Anacostia River by 98%.
