Canal Road NW Slope Stabilization Project
Overview
DC Water completed slope stabilization along Canal Road NW between the Glover‑Archbold Trailhead and Georgetown University’s entrance to improve public safety and support future construction associated with the Potomac River Tunnel Project.
Repeated landslides and falling rock in the corridor led the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to deem the area a public safety concern. Stabilizing the hillside helps reduce risk for everyone traveling through the area. It also prepares the site for the planned deep drop shaft connection to the Potomac River Tunnel, a major infrastructure project designed to reduce the amount of untreated sewage and stormwater entering the Potomac River and improve water quality.
What Was Completed
- Securing the slope by scaling loose material
- Installing approximately 725 steel dowels
- Placing a steel mesh covering to help hold the slope in place
- Hydroseeding the slope and replanting trees at the top as part of restoration
