SMALL DIAMETER WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT PROJECT CAPITOL HILL AREA – ADVISORY NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSIONS 6A AND 6B

SMALL DIAMETER WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT PROJECT CAPITOL HILL AREA – ADVISORY NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSIONS 6A AND 6B

overview

As part of its Capital Improvement Program, DC Water is replacing existing 12-inch and smaller cast iron water mains in various locations throughout the city. Construction for this project will occur in the Capitol Hill area (see construction location map on back). These efforts will help improve water quality and system reliability, increase water pressure in some areas, and maintain adequate flows throughout the system.

scope of work

  • Installation of approximately 4,851 linear feet of 6-inch up to 12-inch water mains
  • Replacement of service lines – including free private side replacement of lead and galvanized iron pipe
  • Replacement of fire hydrants and valves
  • Restoration of all surfaces disturbed by the project construction upon completion of the work

schedule

  • Construction start: On or about 05/2/22
  • Construction completion: On or about 10/31/22
  • Normal work hours: 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday

The contractor may, at times, need to work at night or on weekends, dependent upon certain construction activities, or due to inclement weather.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • For all planned temporary water service shut-offs, affected residents will be notified 48 hours in advance. Service interruptions should be minimal.
  • Construction activities such as these may cause temporary discolored water or low water pressure. If you experience discolored water, it is recommended that you flush your cold water tap from the lowest point inside your property for approximately 15 minutes. If your water does not clear after this process, please contact the DC Water Department of Water Quality and Technology, or our 24-hr Emergency/Command Center.

traffic

  • Lane closures may be required daily with approved traffic plans by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).
  • Notifications regarding “No-Parking” zones will be posted 72 hours prior to construction, in certain areas in and around the job site, as required by DDOT.

partners

  • DC Water is currently working closely with DDOT to ensure minimal disruption during this project.
  •  Regular updates will also be provided to impacted residents, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 6A and 6B, Ward 6 representatives in the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services, and Ward
  •  6 Councilmember Charles Allen and members of his staff.

DC Water Breaks Ground on Piney Branch Tunnel, Final Phase of DC Clean Rivers Project

Today, DC Water broke ground on the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final major tunnel in our Clean Rivers Project. This work will help keep sewage and trash out of local waterways and make Rock Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay cleaner for our community.

When we finish the Piney Branch Tunnel, it will hold at least 4.2 million gallons of rainwater and wastewater during heavy storms. Instead of overflowing into Piney Branch, that water will go to the Blue Plains Water Resource Recovery Facility, where it will be treated.
