NORTHEAST BOUNDARY TRUNK SEWER REHABILITATION PROJECT ADVISORY NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSIONS 7D & 1E

..

OVERVIEW

As part of its regular program to inspect, evaluate and rehabilitate sewers across the city, DC Water will be performing rehabilitation and cleaning of its Northeast Boundary Trunk Sewer (NEBTS) at a number of locations across the District (please see the project site maps on back). In addition to the rehabilitation of an aging combined sewer system, other benefits of this project will include improved structural integrity of the sewer while maintaining adequate hydraulic capacity, and the reduction of stream and groundwater infiltration and potential sanitary sewer overflows.

PROPOSED SCOPE OF WORK

For Segment 1

  • Rehabilitation of approximately 900 linear feet of combined sewer at this location

For Segment 2

  • Rehabilitation of approximately 300 linear feet of combined sewer at this location
  • Heavy cleaning of approximately 50 linear feet of pipe is also required

SCHEDULE

  • Estimated project construction start: Spring 2024
  • Estimated project construction completion: Spring 2025
  • Normal work hours: 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday

The contractor may, at times, need to work at night, dependent upon construction activities or due to inclement weather.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • DC Water will work to ensure minimal disruption during construction operations, and will restore all work sites to their original condition upon completion of the project.

  • The rehabilitation work will require construction of a temporary “bypass pumping system” that will consist of temporary pumps and piping, placed either above the ground, or buried. The temporary system will continuously pump wastewater from the sewer and all individual property sewer service connections around the work area, then convey the wastewater back into nearby sewer pipes, all to ensure continuity of sewer service for all impacted customers during this phase of work.

  • Pumping/bypass equipment noise levels will be closely monitored throughout these construction operations.

  • Some sewage odor may be temporarily noticed during the construction operation.

TRAFFIC PLANS

  • Traffic control, including signage and protective barriers, will be set up to maintain public safety during
construction, in accordance with District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Permit and Standards.

  • Temporary lane closures will occur, and parking may be impacted by the bypass system and other equipment.

PARTNERS

DC Water is currently working closely with DDOT to ensure minimal disruption during this project. Regular updates will also be provided to impacted area residents, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 7D & 1E, Wards 7 and 1 representatives in the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services, and Ward Councilmembers Vincent Gray and Brianne Nadeau and members of their staff.

DC Water Breaks Ground on Piney Branch Tunnel, Final Phase of DC Clean Rivers Project

Today, DC Water broke ground on the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final major tunnel in our Clean Rivers Project. This work will help keep sewage and trash out of local waterways and make Rock Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay cleaner for our community.

When we finish the Piney Branch Tunnel, it will hold at least 4.2 million gallons of rainwater and wastewater during heavy storms. Instead of overflowing into Piney Branch, that water will go to the Blue Plains Water Resource Recovery Facility, where it will be treated.
