  • Customer does not provide access to the premises for DC Water to maintain the meter or meter transmission unit, or
  • Customer fails to perform corrective action necessary for DC Water to install or maintain the meter or meter transmission unit.

What is the Manual Meter Read Fee?

The Manual Meter Read Fee is a charge applied when DC Water must manually read your water meter due to transmission issues and lack of access or corrective action.

    • You fail to take necessary corrective actions to allow installation or maintenance of the meter or transmission system.

  • Respond promptly to any notices requesting access or corrective action.
  • Complete any required repairs or adjustments that allow DC Water to install or maintain the meter system.

What does “providing access” mean?

Providing access means allowing DC Water staff to enter the area where your meter is located, whether inside or outside your property, during scheduled times or as requested.

What kind of corrective action might be required?

Corrective actions may include:

  • Fixing plumbing or structural issues, including valves, installing conduit to allow the transmission device to be installed outside of the building.
  • Removing obstructions.
  • Ensuring the meter is safely reachable.

Will I be notified before the fee is charged?

DC Water Breaks Ground on Piney Branch Tunnel, Final Phase of DC Clean Rivers Project

Today, DC Water broke ground on the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final major tunnel in our Clean Rivers Project. This work will help keep sewage and trash out of local waterways and make Rock Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay cleaner for our community.

When we finish the Piney Branch Tunnel, it will hold at least 4.2 million gallons of rainwater and wastewater during heavy storms. Instead of overflowing into Piney Branch, that water will go to the Blue Plains Water Resource Recovery Facility, where it will be treated.
