Cool Art And Cleaner Rivers Contest

There Are Many Ways To Tell A Story...


Communicating the importance of the DC Clean Rivers Project and the need to invest in water and sewer infrastructure in the District is critical. Sometimes just sharing the data isn’t enough, and this is where art can make a difference. We're awarding 5 artists $500 each to “paint” the story of the District's waterways, and the work Clean Rivers is doing to better the future of our rivers. 


Submissions should reflect the "Cool Arts &  Cleaner River theme by artistically expressing what the future of the Anacostia River and the District will look like as the health of rivers continue to improve.

Selection Process:

Submissions must be received electronically or postmarked by July 1, 2019.

The 5 winners will be judged by the following criteria and announced at Cool Arts Cleaner Rivers event in summer 2019.

  • Creativity/ Uniqueness
  • Visual Impact
  • Skill & Technique

Who Can Submit:

The contest is open to all ages, with the requirement that artist are residents of Washington, DC.

What To Submit:

  • All submissions must have clearly visible the artist's first and last name, address, and an artist statement or bio.
  • All entries must reflect the theme of the contest.
  • Artists may submit only one entry, but up to three concept ideas.  
  • Submissions can be sent electronically (PDG, PNG, JPEG) or by mail.

Who Do You Need To Impress?

Our panel of judges will review all submission and choose the top 5 to be awarded $500 each! 
The 5 winners will paint their mural on a DC Water storm drain.
