TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Soapstone Valley Sewer Rehabilitation Project

Beginning on  September 9, 2024, DC Water contractors will begin mobilizing a construction site on Albemarle Street, NW, between Connecticut Avenue and 32nd Street, to complete work related to the Soapstone Valley Sewer Rehabilitation Project. The closure is expected to begin on September 9, 2024, and be complete on or about the week of December 23, 2024, weather permitting. During this construction, all travel lanes, parking lanes, and the southside sidewalk along Albemarle St NW, between Connecticut Avenue  and 32nd Street will be closed. Detour signs will be posted to safely redirect pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists around the construction zone. Please see the map below for closure details and detour routes.

Traffic and Pedestrian Detour: 

  • Motorists and pedestrians will be directed to follow detour signage.
  • Albemarle Street NW will remain closed to traffic for the duration of the work.
  • The crosswalk on the east side of Connecticut Avenue NW will have a flagger assisting pedestrians across Albemarle Street.
  • No turns permitted onto Albemarle Street from Connecticut Avenue.

Important Information 

  • Commuters and pedestrians will notice road signs and flagging personnel directing them through the temporary closures.
  • People who live or work near the affected locations will notice additional construction equipment and personnel as well as noise associated with construction activities.
  • Maintenance of Traffic Plans (MOTs) have been developed and approved by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to provide safe conditions for vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and workers.
  • Please plan your travel routes accordingly and anticipate potential delays. Traffic control measures will be in place to guide motorists safely through the area.
  • Pedestrian detours will be provided, and signage will be posted to direct pedestrians to safe pathways. Refer to the illustrations above for additional details.

Project Details
The Soapstone Valley Park Sewer Rehabilitation Project will address aging and defective sewer pipes extending from Albemarle Street NW to Broad Branch Road NW.  Benefits of this project would include the rectification of an aging sewer system, improved structural integrity of the pipes while maintaining adequate hydraulic capacity, reduction of stream and groundwater infiltration, and mitigation for potential sanitary sewer overflows.
