Losing the Lead Without Losing Your Yard: Understanding Yard Impacts During Construction

April 30, 2026
Graphic for the May 11th Meeting

With warmer weather bringing increased lead service line replacement activity and more residents spending time outdoors, DC Water’s Lead Free DC (LFDC) program is addressing questions about how construction may affect yards and outdoor spaces.

DC Water invites residents to join the next Lead Free DC virtual community meeting on May 11 from 7–8 p.m., where LFDC construction experts will explain:

•    How contractors document homeowner yards pre-construction
•    How homeowners can prepare ahead of construction
•    What to expect when LFDC restores both private properties and public spaces

We will also provide LFDC program updates, replacement data, and ways the community can engage with the program. This is part of a quarterly series of LFDC that offers a chance for the community to learn more, ask questions, and share their thoughts.

###

Begun in 2019, the Lead Free DC Program was created to accelerate lead service line replacements and combine all our lead reduction efforts under one banner. The goal is to replace all of the city’s estimated 42,000 lead service lines with copper pipe.

It’s part of DC Water’s 10-year, $9.6 billion Capital Improvement Program, committed to upgrading our water and sewer infrastructure to provide safe, reliable service for the nation’s capital today and in the future.
