Free Tap Water on the Go – There’s an App for That

August 27, 2013

Washington, DC – A new mobile phone app offers local residents and visitors an easy way to locate businesses that provide free tap water to anyone with a reusable container. The free “TapIt Metro DC” app is now available at the Apple iTunes App Store and will be available later this week at the Google Play Store for Android devices. The app is part of a joint effort between DC Water, the Council of Governments, the national TapIt campaign and other regional water utilities.

With over 400 TapIt locations in the DC metro area and over 200 locations in the District, the TapIt network provides a no-cost alternative to bottled water that reduces landfill waste and litter. The app makes finding participating businesses as easy as finding an ATM, Metro station or restaurant. App users can tag their refill on Facebook or Twitter, which increases visibility for partnering businesses and allows consumers to share feedback.

“The app makes it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy our high-quality tap water while they are out and about in the city,” said DC Water General Manager George S. Hawkins. “The TapIt network increases public drinking water access, protects the environment and saves people money.”

Jim Neustadt of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission and Chair of the COG Community Engagement Campaign added, “This app is a great reminder that residents of our region have easy access to great-tasting, healthy, abundant tap water. And refills through TapIt are free.”

Trench boxes at construction site for new pit accessing Potomac Interceptor Upstream

DC Water and its contractors continue to make progress constructing new access points to the Potomac Interceptor, one upstream of the damaged section, and an additional entry downstream to divert more wastewater flow from the pipe. These access points will allow crews to install a bulkhead, blocking flow in the pipe upstream of the collapsed area, keeping the site as dry as possible so crews can safely remove an extensive rock dam currently blocking the pipe.

DC Water is releasing new findings regarding the environmental impacts following the January 19, collapse in a section of the Potomac Interceptor. Based on flow monitoring data collected before and after interim bypass pumping was activated, DC Water estimates approximately 243 million gallons of wastewater has overflowed from the collapse site.

Update on Extended Repairs, Safety Measures, and Water Quality Monitoring

Overnight CCTV inspection of the Potomac Interceptor revealed the blockage inside the collapsed sewer line is far more significant, showing a large rock dam stretching approximately 30 feet downstream of the original failure.
