As the Washington, DC region prepares for a major winter storm this weekend, DC Water has activated its Winter Weather Plan to ensure the continued safety and reliability of water service for all customers. With forecasts predicting significant snowfall and extreme cold temperatures, DC Water is taking proactive steps to address potential challenges and support the community in the event of disruptions to water service.

DC Water crews, equipment, and essential supplies have been pre-positioned across the District to respond swiftly to any water-related emergencies. The Winter Storm Incident Management Team has also been activated to monitor the storm and coordinate response. Snow and ice removal equipment have been mobilized and water and sewer operation sites have been pre-treated to minimize risk and maintain critical services.

As the storm approaches, customers are also encouraged to take simple steps to prevent frozen pipes and protect their homes and families:

  • Close indoor valves that control outdoor faucets.
  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, allowing any remaining water to drip out.
  • During extreme cold, let water drip from indoor faucets served by exposed pipes to prevent freezing.
  • If a pipe freezes, do not attempt to thaw it with an open flame. Instead, open faucets so water can flow once temperatures rise.
  • Keep one gallon of water per day for each person and pet in the household, with enough for a three-day supply in the event of a disruption to water service.
  • For more detailed emergency preparedness and cold weather pipe protection tips, visit dcwater.com/emergencies and dcwater.com/cold-weather-pipes.

DC Water teams are on standby and ready to respond around the clock to any issues that may arise. We encourage all customers to review their winter weather plans, take preventive measures at home, and stay informed through our website and social media channels.

DC Water remains committed to maintaining reliable service and supporting our community to stay safe and stay prepared.

Public Encouraged to Provide Comment through June 23

DC residents who want to replace their lead service lines may soon have more options to do it sooner—without having to wait for construction to reach their block.  While the Lead Free DC Program replaces lead service lines at no cost, DC Water has proposed two updates to its program that would make it easier and faster for some residents to get their lead pipes replaced, especially those at higher risk of lead exposure. These proposed changes have been published in the DC Register and are now open for public review.

As DC Water’s Board of Directors considers proposed rate increases for the upcoming 2027 and 2028 fiscal years, we’re asking customers to provide feedback during a public hearing on Tuesday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The proposed rate changes would support critical investments in safe, reliable drinking water, replacement of aging water and sewer lines, cleaner local waterways, and continued lead service line replacement across the District.
