Celebrating Water from River to Tap

DC Water and customers this week celebrate the importance of clean water during national Drinking Water Week. This annual celebration brings together water professionals and the communities they serve in recognizing the vital role water has in our everyday lives.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Protect the Source,” which captures the importance of protecting the health of D.C.’s source water, the Potomac River, and the ways we can continue to ensure clean, safe drinking water in our homes.

DC Water will visit sites across the city to celebrate Drinking Water Week 2019:

  • Tuesday, May 7
    Protect Your Tap from Lead
    7:00pm-9:00pm, 4001 Calvert St NW
    DC Water staff will join residents at the Glover Park Citizens Association’s monthly meeting to deliver a presentation about the importance of identifying and removing sources of lead, the recently passed Lead Pipe Replacement and Disclosure Amendment Act of 2018, and DC Water’s lead service line replacement programs. Customers will also have the opportunity to ask questions about neighborhood water quality.
     
  • Tuesday, May 7
    Announcing DC Water’s Poster and Poetry Contest
    This week, students K-12 can begin submitting art for DC Water’s annual Poster and Poetry Contest. The contest requires students to consider and creatively express the importance of our waterways, and ways they can ensure clean water for themselves and generations to come. District students who attend public, private, charter and home schools are encouraged to participate. The poster contest is open to students K-6, and the poetry contest is open to students in grades 7-12. Winners can earn up to $100 cash prize. Entries must be received electronically or postmarked by Wednesday, June 5, 2019. Visit dcwater.com/watercontest for additional contest and submission details.
     
  • Wednesday, May 8
    Bike to School Day
    7:30am-8:30am, Lincoln Park, 11th and East Capitol St SE
    Team Blue will join Councilmember Charles Allen, District of Columbia Public School leaders, teachers, families and students at the annual Bike to School Day. DC Water will provide cool, refreshing tap water to keep attendees well-hydrated, and important water quality information to keep residents well-informed.
     
  • Thursday, May 9
    Wise Water Use: A Lesson on Water Conservation
    8:30am-9:30am, 220 Taylor St NE
    Team Blue will visit 5th grade students at Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School for a lesson on water conservation, and the many ways students and residents can contribute to a healthy watershed.

    Who Polluted the Potomac?
    8:30am-9:30am, 30 P St NW
    DC Water staff will visit two 3rd grade classes with a lesson about the water cycle and protecting our waterways from pollution to keep our rivers healthy and vibrant.

    DC Water staff will visit the monthly ANC 7C meeting to discuss neighborhood water quality, the importance of identifying and removing sources of lead, the recently passed Lead Pipe Replacement and Disclosure Amendment Act of 2018, and DC Water’s lead service line replacement programs.

DC Water has hit a major milestone in its Lead Free DC (LFDC) program: the 10,000th lead service line replacement. To commemorate the achievement, we teamed up with Washington Football Legend and NFL Hall of Famer Darrell Green to surprise our honorary 10,000th replacement and homeowner. With this achievement, nearly 25% of the estimated lead service lines in the city have been replaced.

DC Water will be doing construction as part of a sanitary sewer rehabilitation project on Clara Barton Parkway in Maryland from Sept 8 - Oct 10, 2025, which may cause delays inbound near the I-495 Beltway interchange. One lane will be closed in the work zone to reline an 800-foot section of the sewer line, known as the Potomac Inteceptor. Access to the inner and outer loops of the Beltway will remain available. Additional lane closure may be necessary intermittently through Oct 24, 2025.

Major Milestone in Sewer Line Repair Near Great Falls

DC Water has completed the final connection on the rehabilitated section of the Potomac Interceptor near Great Falls, renewing an integral part of the region's sewer system. This achievement signals the new pipe section is now fully operational and represents a significant step in completing this complex and critical infrastructure project.

Scaffolding Installation Begins near Watergate Complex for Potomac River Tunnel Project

Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway NW Beginning September 23, 2025, to Mid-November 2025

DC Water is installing temporary scaffolding at the Rock Creek Trail site, west of the Watergate Complex. Trail users are advised to adhere to flagger instructions during installation.

Scaffolding installation is expected to be completed by September 26, 2025, and will remain in place until mid-November 2025.
