Derrick Coley

Alternate Board Member

Currently, Derrick serves as a Deputy Director in the Prince George’s County Department of Environment managing the Animal Services Division, Climate and Energy Division and Legislative Affairs Office.

Prior to his work in Prince George’s County Department of Environment, he served as the Executive Director for External Relations at the Maryland Higher Education Commission, where he directed legislative affairs and stakeholder engagement.

Previously, Derrick served as Special Assistant to the President for Government Relations at Bowie State University, acting as a key liaison for federal and state legislative issues and collaborating with the White House Initiative on HBCUs. His extensive background in local government also includes serving in Prince George’s County Council and Prince George’s County Office of the County Executive, where he managed countywide agency projects and legislative priorities.

Derrick’s foundational expertise in environmental policy was developed over six years at the U.S. Conference of Mayors.  He served as a Staff Associate in the Environmental Programs Division, managing the EPA-funded "Recycling America’s Land" report and coordinating sustainable development initiatives with multiple federal agencies. His work also included municipal solid waste and clean water issues under the Municipal Waste Management Association and Clean Water Partnerships.

He is a graduate of North Carolina State University (B.S. in Biological Science, with a minor in Botany) and American University (M.A. in International Environmental Policy).
