WASA Receives National Honor for Water Utility Management

October 17, 2006

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has once again been recognized as a national leader in water utility management with yesterday’s presentation of the 2006 Platinum Award for Sustained Competitive Achievement in Charleston, South Carolina. WASA was among only nine utilities in the country to receive the national award from the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA) at its annual conference.

"The Platinum Award winners have established a track record of management excellence, continuously applying best management practices to meet the public’s requirements for safe water and low-cost service," AMWA President Mark Premo noted. “Improvement gains from effectiveness and efficiency have been reinvested to enhance quality, increase customer satisfaction and control rates,” he said.

“WASA’s success has been the result of the vision of its Board of Directors and the hard work of its management team and employees who are committed to providing the highest quality water to District residents, as well as advancing wastewater collection and treatment technology,” said WASA Board Chairman Glenn S. Gerstell.

Since its inception in 1997, the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority has implemented an internal improvement program for operational efficiencies and service enhancements. Its $2.1 billion capital improvement plan is addressing long-needed infrastructure upgrades and new regulatory mandates. WASA is also introducing technology improvements and customer service enhancements, coupled with peer reviewed research and career development programs.

The AMWA Platinum Awards for Sustained Competitiveness Achievement focuses on the long-term accomplishments of progressive-thinking water agencies. Platinum Award winners are all previous AMWA Gold Award winners that have successfully maintained and expanded their competitive initiatives in areas such as new technology, infrastructure management and customer satisfaction. WASA was presented with the Gold Award for Competitive Achievement in 2003.
