WASA JOINS COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO KICKOFF WORLD WATER MONITORING DAY™ 2007

September 17, 2007

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) will partner with the Water Environment Federation (WEF), International Water Association (IWA), environmental organizations, local watershed groups, citizens and businesses to kickoff World Water Monitoring Day 2007. This annual, international outreach event will be held on Tuesday, September 18 on the banks of the Potomac River at Oronoco Park in Alexandria, Virginia.

“WASA is a strong steward of the environment and committed to protecting and improving the District’s waterways,” said WASA General Manager Jerry N. Johnson. “The World Water Monitoring Day, which runs from September 18 through October 18, is a wonderful opportunity for citizens to learn about our valuable water resources and to assess the quality of local watersheds.”

To support this month-long event, WASA will monitor a number of stream sites in service areas within the District of Columbia. All findings will be reported to an international database.

The public is invited to join with thousand of volunteers throughout the world to sample water quality. The monitoring activities are easy and fun to do. Everyone from children and adults will be able to use the test kits to sample local bodies of water.

WASA representatives will distribute information on water quality and ways to protect our water resources at the kickoff event. For more information about this event, visit www.WorldWaterMonitoringDay.com.
