UPDATE TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Suitland Pkwy SE repairs to keep outbound lane closed

DC Water and its contractor continue work to stabilize the roadway on Suitland Parkway SE between Firth Sterling Ave and Stanton Rd where a 54-inch stormwater main failed last night, creating a sinkhole. One outbound lane remains closed and is expected to impact the evening rush hour. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes and avoid this area.

Every effort is being made to open the closed lane portion of Suitland Parkway as soon as is safely possible and alleviate traffic. The sinkhole grew to 15 feet wide and 20 feet deep and crews have been working throughout the day to make temporary repairs.

Reopening the outbound lane requires a complex process of excavation and backfilling to support the weight of vehicles. While this will allow the lane to reopen for temporary traffic relief, the work to make permanent repairs continues. DC Water crews will need to do additional excavation to remove, replace, and reline a large section of the 54-inch stormwater line.

Emergency repairs may continue overnight through Friday and into the weekend. The outbound lane will be closed while work is underway and may temporarily reopen once the road is stabilized.

Additional updates will be provided as available through social media on X @DCWater and on dcwater.com or call our 24/7 Emergency Command Center at 202-612-3400.
