TRAFFIC ADVISORY: South Dakota Ave inbound closed at New York Ave/Route 50 due to sinkhole repair

sinkhole on exit to South Dakota Avenue Northeast

DC Water crews are investigating a sinkhole located at the exit to South Dakota Avenue Northeast inbound from New York Avenue/Route 50. Due to the instability of the road, the exit is closed, and traffic is being diverted to alternate routes.

The sinkhole is located in the area of a 42-inch stormwater line, a 21-inch sanitary sewer line, and a 20-inch water transmission line. DC Water has a team on-site trying to identify the cause of the sinkhole to determine the best approach for repairs.

Once work gets underway, the road will need to be stabilized before it can reopen. This could impact South Dakota Avenue, a main commuter artery, during the morning rush hour period.

Motorists traveling inbound on New York Avenue/Route 50 may exit at Fort Lincoln Drive as an option to access South Dakota Avenue or consider other alternative routes.

DC Water will provide additional updates on the repairs as available on X @dcwater or call our 24/7 Command Center at 202-612-3400.
