M Street Restoration Work Continues

(Washington, DC) – DC Water is performing construction activities on M Street, SE as part of the DC Clean Rivers Project.

Due to inclement weather, restoration of the roadway has been extended through January 2015, and the following work items remain:

Phase 3- November 17- December 31, 2014
• While reopening the two westbound lanes from 10th Street to 8th Street, there will be closure of one westbound lane from 8th Street to 10th Street, and also closure of one eastbound lane from 8th Street to 10th Street.

Phase 4-January 1-31, 2015
• During this final phase of work, there will be milling and overlay of the roadway. There will be alternating closure of one travel lane on M Street from 7th Street to 10th Street in order to complete the work.

Other Important Information:
* Normal work hours for Phases 2, 3 and 4 will be from 7:00 a.m. to 7: 00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
* The crosswalk at 9th Street, SE and M Street, SE will be closed at various times.
* Two-way traffic will be maintained on M Street while this construction takes place.
* 24-hour parking restrictions will remain in effect on M Street between 7th Street and 14th Street until December 2014.
* Some traffic stops and delays within the vicinity of the work zone are anticipated.
* Limited night work may take place.
* There will be no work performed on Federal Holidays.

Temporary traffic signs have been set up throughout the area to alert motorists and pedestrians to the upcoming lane shifts and closures. To keep everyone safe, motorists should stay alert and obey the posted speed limits when traveling through this area.

Project Details
The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is implementing the DC Clean Rivers Project for the District’s combined sewer system which comprises a system of tunnels and diversion sewers for the capture of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to Rock Creek and the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers for treatment at DC Water’s Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. The entire project will reduce CSOs annually by 96 percent throughout the system and by 98 percent for the Anacostia River alone.

DC Water is in the final stretch of its slope stabilization project along Canal Road NW, a critical project that will pave the way for Potomac River Tunnel construction at this site. Beginning, the week of December 15, 2025, one westbound lane of Canal Road will be closed during daytime, off-peak hours on weekdays and Saturdays to hydroseed the slope.

These annual notifications are part of DC Water’s ongoing commitment to prevent exposure to lead and remove lead service lines from the District’s drinking water system through the Lead Free DC initiative.

Following the completion of priority valve repairs, DC Water will be doing road restoration work along New York Ave and Bladensburg Rd NE this weekend. The work will require lane closures for the duration of the weekend, reduce capacity, and may cause a significant impact to traffic.
