Rock Creek Green Infrastructure Project C

Alley Permeable Pavement

Rock Creek GI Project C

DC Water is excited to announce construction has begun on our next green infrastructure (GI) project in the Rock Creek sewershed, Rock Creek Project C!

Overview

Rock Creek Project C is part of DC Water's Clean Rivers GI Projects. It is the third green infrastructure (GI) project constructed in the Rock Creek sewershed. The first and second green infrastructure projects, Rock Creek Project A and Rock Creek Project B, were completed in 2018 and 2023, respectively. DC Water’s Clean Rivers Projects will significantly reduce the level of pollution to the District’s waterways produced by the discharge of stormwater runoff and sanitary sewer flows, known as combined sewer overflows (CSOs).

Rock Creek Project C is designed to meet a requirement to manage 1.2” of stormwater runoff from at least 25 impervious acres. This requirement will be achieved through the construction and implementation of permeable pavement within alleyways. Rock Creek Project C GI facilities will be located in the public right-of-way in eight project areas throughout the Rock Creek sewershed of Ward 4 (see image below showing the project areas and go to the documents section for the corresponding factsheets of the sites). Project areas were selected for their feasibility of design and construction, cost-effective implementation, and ability to meet the required stormwater volume capture. GI facilities in this project will not be located on Federal properties or sensitive historical or archeological sites.

Rock Creek Project C includes the construction of alley permeable pavement sites. The main image above shows an example of previously constructed alley permeable pavement. Permeable pavement allows stormwater runoff to infiltrate through the pavement and into the ground and slowly releases any excess stormwater runoff into the combined sewer system.

Maintenance

To ensure continued performance of GI and the associated reduction of combined sewer overflows, the GI facilities will be maintained regularly.  DC Water is responsible for maintenance of GI facilities. Facility IDs will be placed at each GI facility that DC Water constructs in your neighborhood and you can contact DC Water if you notice trash or other issues in the facilities.

DC Water Breaks Ground on Piney Branch Tunnel, Final Phase of DC Clean Rivers Project

Today, DC Water broke ground on the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final major tunnel in our Clean Rivers Project. This work will help keep sewage and trash out of local waterways and make Rock Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay cleaner for our community.

When we finish the Piney Branch Tunnel, it will hold at least 4.2 million gallons of rainwater and wastewater during heavy storms. Instead of overflowing into Piney Branch, that water will go to the Blue Plains Water Resource Recovery Facility, where it will be treated.
