  • Rehabilitation of 70 existing manholes along the sewer alignment, and construction of three new manholes
  • Abandonment of approximately 400 linear feet of existing 36-inch to 51-inch diameter pipelines and other supporting sewer infrastructure at Sherman Circle NW, within NPS property
  • Point repairs to portions of the sewer, as needed
  • Installation of sewer bypass pumping, where needed

schedule

  • Estimated construction start: September 2023
  • Construction completion: September 2026
  • Normal work hours: 9:30am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday

important information

  • DC Water will work to ensure disruptions are minimized during construction operations, and will restore all work sites to their original condition upon completion of the work.
  • The design and rehabilitation technology has been carefully determined to incorporate the least amount of impacts to the surface operations and remove the need for excavation.
  • Some sewage odor may be intermittently noticed during the construction operations.

traffic

  • Traffic control, including signage and protective barriers, will be set up to maintain public safety during construction, in accordance with District Department of Transportation Permit and Standards.
  • Temporary lane closures will occur and parking may be impacted by equipment during the rehabilitation activities

DC Water Breaks Ground on Piney Branch Tunnel, Final Phase of DC Clean Rivers Project

Today, DC Water broke ground on the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final major tunnel in our Clean Rivers Project. This work will help keep sewage and trash out of local waterways and make Rock Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay cleaner for our community.

When we finish the Piney Branch Tunnel, it will hold at least 4.2 million gallons of rainwater and wastewater during heavy storms. Instead of overflowing into Piney Branch, that water will go to the Blue Plains Water Resource Recovery Facility, where it will be treated.
