A Message of Support

June 03, 2020

As an organization, DC Water stands for more equitable treatment of African Americans by police and justice for George Floyd.

We stand shoulder to shoulder with District residents in the peaceful protests to condemn racism, the disturbing pattern of racial injustice, and the demands for equal protections under the law for black and brown people.

Violence and vandalism are unacceptable in any form and we are heartened that the vast majority of protestors have assembled without incident.

Mr. Floyd’s death, and indeed the deaths of Ahmaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, Botham Jean, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Walter Scott, Tamir Rice, LaQuan McDonald, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin and others before them, deserve a feeling of outrage and we will not sit silent as our community is in unrest.

In the midst of this national soul-searching, we reaffirm our deep commitment to diversity and inclusion at DC Water. Discrimination of any kind is not tolerated.  DC Water will always treat all employees and customers with dignity and respect and will work to serve as an anchor in the efforts to help our community heal and make meaningful changes towards achieving equity.

With excessive rainfall forecasted for the region DC Water and WSSC Water are actively monitoring weather conditions and implementing mitigation strategies to minimize the risk of a controlled emergency sewage overflow from the Anacostia Wastewater Pumping Station (WWPS) in Capitol Heights, Maryland. This action would be taken as a last resort as the agencies work together to protect communities and the environment following the July 20 collapse of the 108-inch diameter Anacostia Sewer Force Main in Northeast Washington, D.C. near Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.
