Overview

Potomac River Project A is part of DC Water's Clean Rivers GI Projects. It is the first GI project constructed in the Potomac River Sewershed to significantly reduce the level of pollution to the Potomac River produced by the discharge of stormwater runoff and sanitary sewer flows, known as combined sewer overflows (CSOs).

Potomac River Project A was completed in March 2019 and involved the construction of innovative GI technologies that include bioretention (rain gardens) in planter strips and permeable pavement on streets and alleys. These practices manage stormwater by taking advantage of the earth's natural processes, such as allowing the water to infiltrate into the soil, evaporate into the air or be used by plants which transpire it as vapor. In addition to managing stormwater, GI contributes to beautifying the streetscape and making it more welcoming for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.

Maintenance

To ensure continued performance of GI and the associated reduction of combined sewer overflows, the GI facilities must be maintained regularly.  DC Water is responsible for maintenance of GI facilities. If you notice trash or other issues in the facilities, please contact DC Water and note the Facility ID located on the sign.  Facility ID signs can be found at each GI facility that DC Water constructed in your neighborhood. Project Location Map

Potomac River Project A is composed of two areas in the Glover Park and Burleith neighborhoods of northwest Washington, DC. The areas are delineated by Calvert Street NW to Whitehaven Parkway and 40th Place NW to Wisconsin Avenue NW & Whitehaven Parkway to Reservoir Road NW and 35th Street NW to 39th Street NW.

The Clean Rivers Project is DC Water's ongoing program to reduce combined sewer overflows into the District's waterways - the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek. The Project is a massive infrastructure and support program designed to capture and clean water during heavy rainfalls before it ever reaches our rivers.

Controlled Blasting to Begin for Potomac River Tunnel Work Near Georgetown

Starting the week of July 13, 2026, people who live, work or travel near the Canal Road NW entrance to Georgetown University may hear controlled blasting. This work is part of our Potomac River Tunnel Project.

When blasting happens, neighbors may hear a brief noise or feel light shaking. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on Canal Road NW may also be stopped for a few minutes while we safely complete each blast.
