The Future of DC's Water Starts Here
Pure Water DC is DC Water’s plan to make the District’s drinking water supply stronger and more reliable. Today, all of the District’s drinking water comes from the Potomac River and is treated at the Washington Aqueduct. If drought, pollution, equipment problems, or another emergency affects that supply, it could disrupt water service for many people.
Pure Water DC looks at practical ways to reduce that risk. The program includes protecting the Potomac River, improving how water moves through the system, adding more local storage. working with our regional partners, and studying advanced water recycling at our Blue Plains Water Resource Recovery Facility. The goal is simple: make sure DC Water has more than one way to keep safe drinking water flowing.
A key part of this work is the Pure Water DC Discovery Center. This center will test new treatment methods and show the public how used water can be cleaned so it is safe again. DC Water is also investing $21 million over three years to study options, test new ideas, work with regulators and share information with the public.
Why It Matters
The District depends on a steady supply of clean drinking water every day. DC Water serves more than 700,000 residents and millions of visitors each year, along with homes, schools, hospitals, businesses and federal buildings. A serious problem with the Potomac River or Washington Aqueduct could affect public health, daily life and the local economy.
Pure Water DC Discovery Center
DC Water broke ground on the Pure Water DC Discovery Center at Blue Plains on June 10, 2026.The facility will test advanced treatment technologies, collect information, and show how used water can be cleaned and reused safely.
The center will give residents, students and community partners a simple way to learn more about Pure Water DC, how water recycling works, and why the need for a stronger water supply is critical to the District’s future. It is expected to open in 2027.
