Southbound 3rd Street Lane Closure On or About July 21

(Washington, DC) – DC Water is performing construction activities on 3rd Street, NW as part of the DC Clean Rivers Project.

Beginning Monday, July 21, 2014 through Friday, August 1, 2014, weather permitting, crews will be drilling soil borings on 3rd Street between Rhode Island Avenue, NW and Florida Avenue, NW as part of ongoing field investigations preceding construction on the Northeast Boundary Tunnel. There will be closure of one southbound travel lane on 3rd Street during this period, reducing southbound travel on 3rd Street to one lane. Daily work hours will be from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Important Information:
* There will be closure of some areas along the sidewalk on 3rd Street during this work. Pedestrian detour signs will be placed accordingly.
* There will be minimal impact to the Metrobus stop located on 3rd Street at S Street, NW.
* Delays within the vicinity of the project area are anticipated.
* There will be no work performed on weekends or public holidays.

Temporary traffic signs have been set up throughout the area to alert motorists to the upcoming lane closure. To keep everyone safe, motorists should stay alert and obey the posted speed limits when traveling through this area.

Project Details
The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is implementing the DC Clean Rivers Project for the District’s combined sewer system which comprises a system of tunnels and diversion sewers for the capture of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to Rock Creek and the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers for treatment at DC Water’s Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. The entire project will reduce CSOs annually by 96 percent throughout the system and by 98 percent for the Anacostia River alone.

Authority Offers Virtual and In-Person Options

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Washington Aqueduct, which supplies water to DC Water, annually performs a temporary disinfectant switch from chloramine to chlorine. This year, the switch runs from March 25 to May 6. During that time, customers may notice temporary minor changes in taste and odor.
