Free Tap Water on the Go – There’s an App for That

Washington, DC – A new mobile phone app offers local residents and visitors an easy way to locate businesses that provide free tap water to anyone with a reusable container. The free “TapIt Metro DC” app is now available at the Apple iTunes App Store and will be available later this week at the Google Play Store for Android devices. The app is part of a joint effort between DC Water, the Council of Governments, the national TapIt campaign and other regional water utilities.

With over 400 TapIt locations in the DC metro area and over 200 locations in the District, the TapIt network provides a no-cost alternative to bottled water that reduces landfill waste and litter. The app makes finding participating businesses as easy as finding an ATM, Metro station or restaurant. App users can tag their refill on Facebook or Twitter, which increases visibility for partnering businesses and allows consumers to share feedback.

“The app makes it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy our high-quality tap water while they are out and about in the city,” said DC Water General Manager George S. Hawkins. “The TapIt network increases public drinking water access, protects the environment and saves people money.”

Jim Neustadt of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission and Chair of the COG Community Engagement Campaign added, “This app is a great reminder that residents of our region have easy access to great-tasting, healthy, abundant tap water. And refills through TapIt are free.”

Authority Offers Virtual and In-Person Options

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Washington Aqueduct, which supplies water to DC Water, annually performs a temporary disinfectant switch from chloramine to chlorine. This year, the switch runs from March 25 to May 6. During that time, customers may notice temporary minor changes in taste and odor.
