George O. Porter

Director, Occupational Safety and Health

George Porter serves DC Water as Director, Occupational Safety and Health.  He is responsible for developing and administering the Authority’s health, safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with required standards, regulations, industry best practices and corporate policies. Mr. Porter serves as the strategic management lead in the design of departmental training, mentoring, and coaching for all safety managers, specialists and contractors.  

A safety, health and environmental professional with 25 years’ experience both in the United States and abroad, he is charged with implementing and promoting programs and activities to enhance DC Water’s world-class safety culture.  

Before joining DC Water in 2019, he was the Safety, Health, Environment Director for AECOM, a global network of experts specializing in innovative solutions to many of the world’s most complex challenges. Mr. Porter oversaw and provided safety, health and environmental technical expertise for AECOM’s $382 million infrastructure project for Saudi Arabia’s Customs Authority; and also for various AECOM projects in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, FL. 

The Chicago native and youngest of 10, Mr. Porter grew up in Gary Indiana. He is a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Health Science/Industry Safety. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. 

Mr. Porter is a member of The Board of Certified Safety Professionals, a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, the World Safety Organization and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management. He is ISO and OSHA certified as a compliance officer/auditor. 

An amateur wrestler, Mr. Porter is a high-school state wrestling champion, a 2X college All-American, a 3X national champion in Freestyle and Greco Roman, a 2X world champion in Freestyle and a World Bronze Medalist/Greco Roman.
