Damage Claims
DC Water employs about 1,000 skilled workers who work at many sewer and water system locations throughout the District of Columbia, seven days a week. We make every effort to restore any disturbed areas and reimburse customers who have experienced loss or damage as a result of work performed by DC Water.
If you believe damage to your property was a result of work performed by DC Water, please submit a written statement to DC Water's Risk Management Office with details surrounding your loss event. Your statement should include your name, incident location/address, time and date of incident along with any other pertinent information that will assist us with investigating your claim. What to Expect
The Risk Management Office will attempt to resolve your claim within 45 days; however, we may need more time to fully investigate your claim before our insurance company can make a decision.
Here is what you can expect after you submit the Property Damage Claim:
- We will send you a letter telling you that we have received your damage claim and that we will investigate it and report back to you within 45 days.
- If we have enough information, you will also receive a letter stating the insurance claim number assigned to your property damage claim.
- If we need more information to investigate your claim, we will send you a follow-up letter requesting additional information.
- The claim will be assigned to an insurance adjuster who will investigate and make a recommendation to DC Water about your claim.
- You will be notified of the final decision about your claim, including any settlement or payment for loss or damage.
Appealing Your Claim Decision
DC Water's insurance company will notify you in writing of the findings related to your claim. If you are not satisfied with the findings and can provide new factual information or documents that will further support your claim, you may submit your written request for reconsideration to the risk manager, using the Damage Claims contact information above.
Within 30 days of receiving your request for an appeal, we will review your claim and notify you of our findings by mail.
